I had the same thing happen to me with BT - I did have some recourse however........I went to my bank as I had previously cancelled the direct debit. I advised them that as there wasnt a valid direct debit set up and that i had not given any instruction then they were to refund me my money. THEY DID! The only way anyone is legally entitled to take funds without giving you written notice is to apply to the courts for an attachment of your Bank Account. Seek advice from the Citizens Advice, but I would contact British Gas and tell them you want copies of all correspondence they have sent you regarding this matter........that should freak them out!
